About Us

Americans for Safe Access is the largest National organization of patients, medical professionals, scientists and concerned citizens promoting safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research.

ASA National is dedicated to providing current news and resources to medical cannabis patients and their providers while creating a movement to promote safe and legal access. ASA National works to overcome political and legal barriers by creating policies that improve access to medical cannabis for patients and researchers by engaging a multifaceted strategy that incorporates public education, impact litigation, grassroots development and advocacy, media campaigns, and direct support services.

ASA National Director, Steele Clarke Smith, III founded the second ASA State Chapter in California in 2005, in Orange County, California. Since Steeles’ Federal Indictment in 2007 for his legal Collective, Steele has been standing firm for patients rights in the first Federal marijuana indictment where medical testimony will be allowed at trial. During this time, the five founding ASA members have become obscured by the founding of other organizations and from this activism arose the need for a National Chapter of Americans for Safe Access. As such, the Non-Profit National Chapter owns the US Trade Mark for ASA (Americans for Safe Access).

ASA created a vision for what safe access should look like, and the legal framework to support that vision, through the passing of state and local laws and numerous court battles. Our extensive monitoring of law enforcement activity has helped thousands of patients to navigate the legal system, held law enforcement accountable for their actions, and established major policy changes. On Capitol Hill, we have fought back against attempts to further undermine our state laws, and we continue to work with members of Congress and the Administration to resolve the federal conflict.
